WATER AND ITS MANY ISSUES.
METHODS AND CROSS-CUTTING ANALYSIS (WP4, 3/3)

The first goal of the Annual ASEAN Water Platform (AWP) is to build capacity in research into water natural resource management (WNRM) within the partner countries’ institutions, by means of gathering researchers from different backgrounds for multidisciplinary methodological approaches related to the analysis of WNRM sector.
The second objective is to disseminate knowledge on WNRM and enhance collaboration between the participants. The platform must be able to increase the research collaboration between participants and to set the basis future long-term partnership between the representatives of different institutions in EU and in ASEAN. Then, the institutions partners must be able to set up and run projects on a bigger international scale.
In order to achieve those goals, AWP relies on the following working principles:
- Transfer of methodological tools;
- Multidisciplinary approaches (social sciences, sciences);
- Good balance between theories and practical work;
- Interactivity among participants;
- Disseminate knowledge;
- Build a collaborative network (academic and non-academic);
- Intercultural exchanges.
This year, CMU will host the final AWP which will last for 14 days from 6th to 18th July 2020. The training will gather more than 100 participants from different countries and backgrounds. AWP is the only training within Wanasea project that is open to participants from outside the consortium, mainly from Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar, thanks to co-funding sources from AUF, IRD, AFD and University of Nantes.
This year, besides Plenary Sessions and workshops as the last 2 years, participants of the AWP 2020 will also have the opportunity to join new activities that will enrich their knowledge in different areas: Restitution of the Research Program on Inequalities and Environmental Changes Nexus in the Mekong River Basin (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar); one day preparation for each workshop proposed; a special half-day session at the regional Centre of EFEO in Chiang Mai; a visit of Chiang Mai city led by environmental NGOs; trainee presentations on their research papers in open sessions supported by junior and seniors experts; a research communication workshop led by French Institute of Research for Development (IRD).
In order to prepare for the AWP 2020 in July, the project team had worked together in February 2020 in Chiang Mai discussing logistic and academic issues. Details are available in the Meeting Minutes below (available for download).
The AWP 2020 consists of different plenary sessions and four thematic workshops including:

Each candidate can choose to attend one workshop that fits your desire. The workshops will start on Friday, 10th July until Wednesday, 15th July. Students will then share what they have gained at the end of the training via the Workshops restitution on Saturday, 18th July. In between, on 16th and 17th July, participants can choose to attend either one of these options below:
DOCTORIALES (Doctoral Students Days) / Thursday, 16th and Friday, 17th of July
These exchange days are an opportunity to address theoretical and practical issues related to the WANASEA project, with a focus on methodological issues. Each session lasts one day and is organized around a unifying and multidisciplinary theme in order to allow a cross-disciplinary view of researchers from several disciplines.
Morning: Two doctoral students will present a paper/chapter in progress followed by a review and discussion of another doctoral student and a senior researcher as submission to critical peer review is the founding principle of scientific approach. A Q&A session will then be open with the audience. There will be one presentation/morning/day with the agenda below:
- Presentation by doctoral student: 30 minutes
- Review and discussion by another doctoral student: 15 minutes
- Review and discussion by a senior researcher: 15 minutes
Afternoon: The session is devoted to presentations on a methodological and/or opening nature (For example: access to and use of databases, training in scientific writing, initiation to GIS, modelling, professional integration after the thesis, etc.) by a senior researcher. There will be 2 presentations/afternoon/day during 45 minutes each.
Audience: Around 70 to 80 people.
NOTICE: Participants of the Doctoral Students Days can’t attend the Communication Workshop below.
COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP, Friday 16th, 17th of July
- To prove the value and specificity of your work to non-scientific and non-specialized audiences.
- To learn how to share your work in a simple, concrete, motivating and attractive way.
- To raise interest, create links and the right conditions for possible collaborations and partnerships.
Trainees will have the opportunity to:
- Learn how to highlight your work using a concise, clear and effective speech,
- Target specific audiences and make yourself understood by them,
- Improve your speaking skills by developing your style and your ease of delivering messages.
Selection criteria & Prerequisites
Only 20 trainees will be selected to attend this session.
They should have:
- A good English level,
- A concrete (short or medium-term) communication objective,
- An audience in mind: fundraisers, scientific communities, the general public, etc.
- Understanding your own practice: weakness and strengths
- Experiment with the appropriate tools to prepare a speech
- Structuring and preparing your speaking situations
